The 27-year-old, who has been clocked at speeds in excess of 90mph, had not played since July 2021 due to back and elbow injuries.

He was instrumental in his team’s eight-wicket victory over Paarl Royals.

Paarl were restricted to 142-7, with Jos Buttler top-scoring with 51, before Cape Town cruised to victory with 27 balls to spare, led by 19-year-old South African Dewald Brevis’s dazzling 70 not out from 41 balls.

Archer was given the third over and returned with a wicket maiden, dismissing Wihan Lubbe, who skewed a catch while trying to hit the ball off a length.

England’s white-ball captain Buttler hit a six off the second ball of Archer’s second over – an over that cost 13 runs – but Archer responded by bowling South Africa’s David Miller, who was caught at deep extra cover, and Ferisco Adams, who was deceived by a slower ball and caught, in consecutive balls in his final over.

Archer quickly established himself as one of England’s most exciting pace prospects in 2019, bowling the’super over’ that helped England win the World Cup and making an impressive start to his Test career in the Ashes later that summer.

However, his career has been plagued by injuries since early 2021, first an elbow issue that required two surgeries and then a back stress fracture last May that forced him to miss the season.

He has not played for England since March 2021, but he has been named to the squad for three one-day internationals against South Africa later this month.

Olly Stone, Archer’s England teammate, also took 2-31 for MI Cape Town, including the wicket of Buttler, who was bowled attempting another scoop.

Former England captain Eoin Morgan hit 19 and England opener Jason Roy hit 13 for Paarl, while Sam Curran hit 20 from 16 balls in Cape Town’s chase after taking 0-23 from three overs earlier.
