The Premier League leaders won a hard-fought game at Leicester City thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s goal. In the first minute of the second half, the Brazilian scored after latching on to a deft pass from Leandro Trossard and rolling his shot past Danny Ward.

Trossard’s first-half goal was disallowed after Arsenal’s Ben White tripped Ward in the build-up.

Arsenal now leads Manchester City by two points after Pep Guardiola’s team defeated Bournemouth 4-1 in their Saturday afternoon match.

Leicester remained 14th despite having a goal disallowed for offside shortly after Trossard’s disallowed effort and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall curled a shot just wide in the second half.

Arsenal’s bid for their first league title since 2003-04 appeared to be faltering when they were defeated 3-1 by Manchester City on 15 February, but they have since recovered with a maximum return of six points from two difficult away trips.

Arsenal’s recent league slump, in which they dropped seven points from a possible nine, may be behind them, but they struggled to play at their best at King Power Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated possession in the early stages and seemed to have hit their stride when the game’s first controversial moment occurred.

Trossard’s brilliant curling shot from outside the area was initially ruled a goal, but the referee overturned it after consulting with the video assistant referee. As the ball came over at a corner, Ben White’s left arm was wrapped around Ward’s right, and White and Barnes appeared to collide at the same time.

Arsenal’s sense of injustice grew a few minutes later when Pawson waved away their claims for a penalty after Saka collided with Harry.

Martinelli scored his ninth goal of the season just 51 seconds into the second half, calmly stroking the ball past Ward, sustaining a painful blow to the right leg when Wilfred Ndidi trod on him while scoring.

Saka also had a goal disallowed when Martinelli was flagged for offside, but Arsenal struggled to establish themselves in the second half.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was given the captain’s armband by his club as a mark of respect in the week of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of his native Ukraine, came close to scoring his second goal in as many games when Ward saved his curling shot.

Following this victory and a win at Aston Villa a week ago, Arsenal now has the opportunity to capitalize on home advantage against lower-tier opposition, as they face Everton on Wednesday and Bournemouth next Saturday.
