Greenwood Goal Secures Point For Manchester United At Southampton

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be disappointed with both the performance and the result, but Southampton deserved it after bouncing back impressively from a defeat at Everton in their first game.

Manchester United wasn’t able to keep up with their opening-day thrashing of Leeds United, as Southampton fought harder for a draw at St Mary’s.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looked full of attacking menace and threat in their 5-1 win over Leeds, but they were a pale shadow of that performance here as Saints earned their first point of the season and threatened to win.

Southampton overcame Manchester United’s early surge, taking the lead on the half-hour mark when Che Adams’ shot deflected off Fred and past keeper David de Gea.

Mason Greenwood’s shot squirmed under Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy 10 minutes after the break, and Solskjaer then moved to punish Saints further by replacing the disappointing Anthony Martial with £73m man Jadon Sancho.

Instead, it was Southampton who created the best chance to take all three points, with De Gea making a crucial save from Adam Armstrong as he looked to score.

Manchester United started very well and had a threatening spell after equalizing, but this was an average performance from a team with genuine Premier League title ambitions.

United became increasingly sloppy as the game progressed, with Paul Pogba’s occasional flashes of brilliance failing to compensate for the complete lack of inspiration around him.

Martial made little or no contribution, and it was no surprise when he was replaced by Sancho, who was quiet as Southampton regained composure and a measure of control following Greenwood’s leveler.

It is early days, and United were superb in their thrashing of Leeds United, but this is the type of careless, lacklustre display they cannot afford to repeat too often in a season that already appears to offer little margin for error for those chasing top-flight honours.
