Manchester City earned their victory, as the eight-time champions maintained their record of never losing in the third round under Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea, on the other hand, will rue missed opportunities in the first half, with Christian Pulisic twice denied by Ortega, while Hall should have done better with his close-range attempt after doing the hard work by creating space for himself.

Hall was unlucky in the second half when the excellent Ortega saved his fierce first-time effort.

Raheem Sterling entered the game midway through the second half for the first time since leaving City in the summer.
